May this Day Bless you with Opulence and Prosperity that Never Diminishes - Happy Akshaya Tritiya from Astrologer Vinayak Bhatt

Akshay Tritiya & its Remedies

Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the third day (tritiya) of the Shukla paksha (bright half) of Vaisakh (Indian month). According to the Gregorian calendar, this falls in the month of April-May. It is on this day that both the Sun and the moon are said to be at their planetary best, Sun and Moon will be in their exaltation signs, Aries and Tauras respectively. This day is also known as 'Akha Teej'.

This day is also celebrated as the Parashurama Jayanti (birth anniversary) of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Parashurama, the unique confluence of knowledge, valor and courage, is called the sixth Avtar (Aveshvatara) of Shri Hari Vishnu. Parashurama, the supreme devotee of Lord Shiva, is the god of justice and is considered a symbol of courage. Lord Parashuram was born on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.

Akshaya Tritiya is a day dedicated to Lord Vishnu - the preserver of the Universe. According to Vedic literature, the Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya. The Sanskrit word Akshaya comprises of A (NOT) and KSHAYA (ERODE), it means that which does not decay, diminish or erode.

According to the Vedic scriptures, there are two types of activities, one pertaining to one’s body which is perishable, and the other pertaining to one’s soul. This signifies that activities pertaining to one’s body are not permanent in nature just like the body which will decay one day whereas activities pertaining to evolving oneself at the core or soul level will always be eternal and everlasting. Therefore doing meditation, Jaap, yajna, daan-punya on this day evolves us from our core, our soul.

It is also mentioned in Karma Vipak Samhita, that Lord Shiva while explaining the relevance of Nakshatras and Nakshatra Padas also explains the concept of Punya-Kshaya. The lord explains that humans in their course of life whatever good or bad karma he/ she accumulates will diminish over time. Lord Shiva tells about a particular individual who due to his good karma got entry into heaven, but only till the time his good karma (punya) was used completely. Therefore, the curx of the matter is that we use up all our good or bad karmas. On the brighter side, the karma done on Akshaya Tritiya will forever remain intact or unused.

Special Meaning of Akshaya Tritiya

In our Vedic system all festivals and occasions are celebrated on specific ‘Tithis’ and not as per English calendar dates. Every tithi has a very special element attached to it.

Akshaya Tritiya has two special elements, this tithi is also-

1) Treta-Yugaadi Tithi – The tithi prevailing at the beginning of each yuga is called the Yugaadi tithi, Treta Yuga started on Akshaya Tritiya. There are four yugas as per the Vedic system-

I. Sat-Yuga: The main deity of this yuga was Lord Shiva, this yuga began on Shukla Paksha (bright half)-Navami (9th) of Kartik Maas.

II. Treta-Yuga: The main deity of this yuga was Lord Vishnu, this yuga began on Shukla Paksha (bright half)-Tritiya (3rd) of Vaishaka Maas.

III. Dwapar-Yuga: The main deity of this yuga was Lord Brahma, this yuga began on Krishna Paksha (dark half) - Triyodashi (13th) of Bhadrapas Maas.

IV. Kali-Yuga: The main deity of this current yuga are the Pitras, this yuga began on an Krishna Paksha (dark half)-Amavasya (30th) of Magha Maas.

2) Manvaadi Tithi – Refers to the Vedic system of time-calculation. As per vedic scriptures, 71 yugas have to pass/ complete then one manvantra completes. After every pralaya (total destruction), the day when creation is re-started this day is called a Manvaadi tithi. In other words, 71 yugas have to be completed, then the process of total destruction and then the process of re-creation.

This is the true constitutional element of Akshaya Tritiya and is of high signification because Treta yuga started from Akshaya Tritiya and also marks the beginning of one manvantra.

Events associated with Akshaya Tritiya

As stated in the Vedic scriptures the following events happened on Akshaya Tritiya:

Legends associated with Akshaya Tritiya

As per one of the tales, Shri Krishna's poor Brahmin friend, Sudama, visited his palace with a fistful of flattened rice. Sudama had eaten Shri Krishna's share of the food during childhood. Therefore, he wanted to return his portion of the food. Shri Krishna whole-heartedly accepted the humble offering and quietly showered his friend with fortunes. As a result, Sudama's sufferings ended, and he became a wealthy man. This event took place on the Tritiya Tithi, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha and hence the significance.

According to another legend, Shri Krishna saved Draupadi and the Pandavas from Sage Durvasa's wrath by turning their empty food pot into an Akshaya Patra (a vessel with an endless supply of food). Sage Durvasa expressed his desire to have a meal at Draupadi's humble abode when the Pandavas were in exile, but the latter had no food to offer to him. Therefore, when Shri Krishna learnt about it, he saved her and the Pandavas from Sage's curse/anger.

Rishi Lomash selected Akshaya Tritiya to start teaching the intricacies of Jyotish to his disciple Sujanma.

Lord Shiva started explaining Jyotish (Jyotisharnavnavneetam) to Parvati Maa on Akshaya Tritiya.
